Genie benefits significantly from the presence of column metadata. In this talk we will describe the various components that feed into a high-quality Genie space and review some code you can use to populate the base Unity Catalog column metadata in bulk. The code makes use of customizable prompts and optional data sampling to produce high-quality metadata across entire schemas or even catalogs.

Full Summary
Scaling metadata for Genie: how Optus turned 15,000 tables into AI-ready context
Enterprises rarely miss on conversational analytics because of models. They miss because the context layer is thin, inconsistent, or missing. In a joint field and customer session, the speakers detailed how Optus, an Australian telecom with three decades of data, unlocked reliable natural language analytics on Genie by treating metadata as an engineering deliverable, not a one-off cleanup.
FAQ
The tool is published as a public GitHub repository called Databricks Metadata Generator. The app includes column fingerprinting, a reviewer workflow, prompt templates, and an abbreviations dictionary, and it outputs DDL for deployment.
The sampling step is PII-aware. It skips columns that have row filters, column masks, or PII-related tags. Teams can adjust the tag list to align the exclusion behavior with their governance policies.
Per-table generation is non-deterministic, so a repeated column can receive different descriptions across layers. Bulk generation with fingerprinting creates one reviewed description that is applied everywhere that column appears, improving consistency and containing LLM cost.
The speakers recommend a Genie-specific prompt aligned to best practices, which produces richer descriptions of entity, grain, and relationships. It is opt-in because the longer prompt can occasionally hallucinate on messier tables.
Genie Workbench is a Databricks field engineering effort that benchmarks a Genie space, identifies issues, proposes patches, and rescoring improvements. Stronger metadata from the generator improves baseline scores, so the two tools work together rather than overlap.
