Summary

  • Databricks has acquired Mooncake Labs to enhance Lakebase, a new category of OLTP database built on Postgres, integrated into the Lakehouse, and optimized for AI agents
  • Mooncake accelerates the Lakebase vision, making Postgres data immediately usable across workloads, enabling developers and agents to run applications, analytics, and AI on the same fresh data in the Lakehouse and Agent Bricks, without ETL pipelines required.
  • Together, Lakebase and Mooncake redefine the operational database for the age of AI.

We’re excited to announce that Mooncake Labs is joining Databricks. Mooncake accelerates the vision of Lakebase, a new category of OLTP database built on Postgres and optimized for AI agents. With Lakebase, developers gain a single foundation for applications, analytics and AI, fully integrated with the Databricks Lakehouse and Agent Bricks.

Building for the speed of agents

AI agents are transforming application development, generating and deploying code at a pace no human can match. Each new workload brings new data that must be connected, governed, and made available instantly. Traditional OLTP databases, built on decades-old architectures and sitting outside the data platform, weren’t designed for this world. They depend on brittle pipelines and silos that slow developers down, increase costs, and create fragility.

Mooncake addresses this challenge by letting developers and agents run transactions, analytics, and AI workloads on the same fresh data without the overhead of ETL pipelines. Postgres changes are mirrored in real time to the lakehouse, ensuring analytics and AI stay current as agents create new tables, events, and workflows at unprecedented speeds.

What this means for customers

With Mooncake’s innovations incorporated into Lakebase, developers and enterprises gain:

  • Unification: A single foundation for apps, analytics, and AI, powered by the same fresh data
  • Scale with agents: The ability to handle rapid creation of apps and data sources without having to manage an explosion of complex ETL pipelines
  • Agent-ready integration: Data is available instantly into the Lakehouse and Agent Bricks, enabling real-time reasoning and decision-making by AI agents.
  • Team expertise: The Mooncake team brings deep knowledge of Postgres and open table formats, with proven innovation at the intersection of OLTP and the lakehouse.

The team behind Mooncake

Beyond the technology, the Mooncake team brings deep expertise in Postgres internals, distributed systems, and open table formats like Iceberg. Founders Zhou Sun, Cheng Chen, and Pranav Aurora have built products that bridge the gap between transactional workloads and large-scale analytics, with a focus on speed, reliability, and openness. Their experience at the intersection of OLTP and AI-scale workloads strengthens Lakebase’s ability to deliver on its vision: a unified foundation for applications, analytics, and AI agents.

Looking ahead

Together, Databricks and Mooncake will reimagine the operational database for the age of AI. The future will be defined by agent-driven applications that generate and adapt code, workflows, and data at machine speed. To support this shift, enterprises need a single foundation where applications, analytics, and AI agents all run together — without pipelines, silos, or delays. By combining Lakebase’s new architecture with Mooncake’s innovations, we are building that foundation.
