Kongsberg Digital achieves 60% cost reduction and real-time data refresh with Databricks
Reduction in data processing costs

Kongsberg Digital, part of Norway’s Kongsberg Group, develops software-as-a-service (SaaS) solutions for heavy-asset industries like oil and gas, energy and maritime sectors. These are industries that often lag behind when it comes to digitization, something Kongsberg Digital with their 1,200 employees is helping them with. To support these industries’ complex needs, Kongsberg Digital embarked on a journey to modernize their business data infrastructure. With Databricks, the company has transformed their data warehousing capabilities, cutting costs and enhancing data refresh frequency to provide real-time insights that drive business efficiency.
Speeding up data processing
Before moving to Databricks, Kongsberg Digital relied on a legacy on-premises data warehouse. An initial cloud migration to Azure Data Factory and Azure SQL provided an improvement, but it was costly and limited in scalability. “We needed a system that could handle our rapid growth and still be cost-efficient,” David Molina, Director of Business Intelligence and Data Analytics at Kongsberg Digital, said. The company’s goal was to increase the frequency of data refreshes to provide teams with near real-time insights while keeping costs manageable — a challenge Databricks helped them solve.
Increased speed, lowered costs
Kongsberg Digital implemented Databricks as the core of their new business data platform. Through this transformation, the company improved their data refresh rate from four times per day to every hour, a 300% increase in frequency. This shift enables Kongsberg Digital’s teams to access timely data that supports decision-making across business functions, from resource allocation to customer insights.
“This real-time access to data has been a game changer for our end users,” David explained. “With hourly updates, users can trust the data and rely on it to make quick informed decisions.” Not only has this upgrade improved data availability, but it has also increased engagement with data products, as teams now have confidence in data accuracy and relevance.
Beyond real-time insights, Kongsberg Digital realized a substantial 60% reduction in data processing costs by moving to Databricks. According to David, “Switching to Databricks cut our costs and made refreshing data more efficient.” This savings came primarily from optimized workflows and the reduced compute demands of the Databricks Platform compared with previous solutions.
Driving business growth with real-time data access
The impact of Databricks on Kongsberg Digital’s business data operations has been profound. With real-time data at their fingertips and significant cost savings, teams across the organization can now leverage timely insights to optimize resources and improve project efficiency. The transition to Databricks has also paved the way for a seamless onboarding experience for new team members, who can quickly get up to speed using standardized templates and CI/CD pipelines built into Databricks.
With the foundational data platform in place, Kongsberg Digital is well-positioned to scale their use of AI and machine learning in the future, further enhancing their product offerings and supporting growth in a competitive industrial SaaS market.
