Tata 1mg is an integrated healthcare company committed to revolutionizing healthcare by making it affordable, understandable and accessible. Serving 220 million customers across India in 27,000+ pin code markets, Tata 1mg had relatively higher cost solutions implemented for managing their data stack. After migrating to the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, Tata 1mg simplified access to data, enhanced collaboration and streamlined processes, leading to cost reductions and performance improvements. Today, Tata 1mg continues to grow by making data-driven decisions that prioritize customer satisfaction through improved healthcare accessibility.
Resource-heavy data warehouses slow and silo data, stalling innovation
Committed to breaking down barriers to healthcare, Tata 1mg offers a diverse range of services, catering to millions of Indian customers online, in person and through delivery. This initiative relies on data from various sources, including customers, physical locations, traffic and weather patterns and purchasing information. Accounting for the impact of these factors is essential for Tata 1mg to enhance personalization, customer experiences, onsite assessments, real-time deliveries and supply chain efficiency.
As features available in Databricks looked promising and cost-efficient, the team grew excited to leverage the platform to uncover new use cases. Rahul Khanna, Senior Engineering Manager of Data Engineering at Tata 1mg, explained, “While our legacy architecture served its purpose, relying on truncate-and-reload tables made transformations costly and time-consuming. Autoscaling clusters were available but too expensive to utilize fully. To prepare for the future, we needed more accessible and efficient features.” Data science, data engineering and analytics teams also needed to adequately scale use cases while controlling costs, optimizing operations and securing shared access to shared data.
To continue their mission and expand healthcare in India, Tata 1mg preferred to upgrade from a data warehouse to data intelligence platform. Consolidating structured and unstructured data in a highly capable, user-friendly environment gives the organization access to data, insights and analytics for intelligent decision-making. With the necessary capacity and tools for innovation and use case fulfillment, Tata 1mg can accelerate outcomes and address a multitude of business challenges faster and with more information.
Data-driven decision-making with the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform
Tata 1mg migrated to the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform because of its feature availability, data management efficiency, cost-effective scaling and vendor independence. The platform’s unified architecture and manageable foundation became the backbone of Tata 1mg’s data storage and organization.
Over eight months, Tata 1mg smoothly transitioned to the Databricks Platform. Unity Catalog improved workflows, allowing data teams to capture and view data lineage. This component also ensures data governance with fine-tuned access controls, fostering teamwork and productivity. Tata 1mg is leveraging various hardware options like instance types, spot instances and instance pools, to enable and embed scalability for now and the future. Furthermore, the separate Delta Lake storage layer prevents vendor lock-in and facilitates easy integration with additional tools.
Shrish Talwar, Director of Data Systems at Tata 1mg, explained, “Integration with BI tools like Tableau and Metabase fuels seamless data visualization and analysis, empowering informed decision-making. Operating from a center of excellence (CoE), the enterprise is democratizing data for various teams using streamlined access, self-service analytics and timely insights to drive business transformation initiatives productively.
Simplifying infrastructure to fulfill more use cases efficiently
Since modernizing their data architecture, Tata 1mg has elevated customer service and expanded healthcare availability with trustworthy data on the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform. After transitioning from their data warehouse and optimizing data processing with automated Databricks components, Tata 1mg reduced extract, transform, load (ETL) costs by 50%. Hundreds of business use cases are in production, over 1,000 reports are generated and more than 1,000 users consume these insights, embedding a data-driven culture across all business lines.
The Databricks Platform supports Tata 1mg’s e-pharmacy, labs, retail, e-consultants, hospitals and corporate wellness.
Data teams assess potential locations for new stores and labs using location-based performance and geospatial analytics. Considering demographic trends, competitor presence and local economic indicators, Tata 1mg identifies optimal areas for expansion to enhance customer access and ensure business success. Moreover, Tata 1mg optimizes real-time delivery by reducing lag times and costs and improving customer satisfaction through route optimization, weather and traffic pattern analysis and predictive maintenance.
Looking ahead, Tata 1mg is committed to relying on the Databricks Platform to continue accelerating commerce, unifying procurement and expanding both physical and digital customer experiences. Talwar noted, “The transition to Databricks has significantly enhanced our data architecture, delivering tangible value in cost reduction and performance improvements that enable us to do more with less.”
