This blog post was updated on November 1, 2024 to reflect the latest compliance status for U.S. Department of Defense Impact Level 5 and offering availability for AWS GovCloud.

We are excited to announce that Databricks on AWS GovCloud is now generally available! We recently earned our first FedRAMP® High agency ATO and received Provisional Authorization (PA) for the U.S. Department of Defense Impact Level 5 (IL5). We are also ready today to support your International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and HIPAA use cases.

“As we proudly announce Databricks' achievement of a FedRAMP High agency ATO and Department of Defense Impact Level 5 Authorization, we reaffirm our unwavering commitment to empowering federal agencies with secure and scalable data analytics solutions. This milestone underscores our dedication to supporting the mission-critical work of government entities while upholding the highest standards of data security and compliance.”
— Jude Boyle, Vice President of Federal Sales, Databricks

Today’s announcements are the latest in a series of exciting compliance milestones for Databricks, most significantly for our public sector customers. In this blog, we will cover the Databricks products now available in AWS GovCloud and how to enable your Databricks workloads to help you meet the applicable controls related to FedRAMP High and DoD IL5.

Governance, data warehousing, ETL, and more - now available for U.S. Federal Government agencies and contractors

Last fall we introduced the Databricks Data Intelligence Platform, which builds on the existing and unique capabilities of the Lakehouse architecture. It is the only data platform in the industry with a unified governance layer across data and AI, a single unified query engine that spans ETL, SQL, machine learning, and BI – and is powered by a Data Intelligence Engine that understands the uniqueness of your data. When you start using Databricks on AWS GovCloud, you’ll now be able to take advantage of these key products in our platform such as Databricks SQL, Unity Catalog, Delta Sharing, Lakeview Dashboards, and Delta Live Tables while meeting compliance requirements for FedRAMP High, DoD IL5, and enabling you to achieve ITAR compliance. See our documentation for the full list of features now available.

“Utilizing Databricks on AWS GovCloud allows us to leverage key solutions such as Unity Catalog, DBSQL, and Delta Live Tables. This is a major unlock for our company. Gone are the days of managing permissions separately across workspaces. Gone are the days of trying to tag and maintain assets via external systems. Everything is so much simpler and more transparent in Unity Catalog, leading to better governance and control of our assets, and better user engagement. DBSQL, likewise, unlocks more familiar tooling for analysts, including Lakeview dashboards and alerting. With these major capability improvements for GovCloud use-cases, we can now move forward faster, and more confidently, on top of the Databricks data intelligence platform.”
— Nicholas Rennie, Senior Manager of Data Architecture, Precision Castparts Corp.

Ensure FedRAMP High and DoD IL5 compliant workloads with the Databricks Enhanced Security and Compliance Add-on

To help you configure your workloads to comply with FedRAMP High and DoD IL5, the Compliance Security Profile (“CSP”) is automatically enabled on all the workspaces created in the Databricks on AWS GovCloud environment. It has additional monitoring, enforced instance types for inter-node encryption, a hardened compute image, and other features that help meet the applicable controls of FedRAMP High and DoD IL5 compliance. CSP is offered as part of the Enhanced Security and Compliance (“ESC”) add-on, which provides the technical capabilities to support the security and compliance needs of our customers when processing regulated and sensitive datasets.
